2014 RadWaste Summit Draws Record Crowd

Nearly 350 key officials from government and industry gathered in Summerlin, Nev., Sept. 2-5 for the Eighth Annual RadWaste Summit. The conference, which attracted the largest participation in its history, featured discussions on the full range of issues facing the radioactive waste marketplace, from the path forward for the recovery of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and the overall Department of Energy waste mission  to upcoming Nuclear Regulatory Commission low-level waste regulations, challenges in regulating radioactive byproducts from oil and gas production and updates from the Army Corps of Engineers on cleanup at FUSRAP sites. “Let me take just a minute to talk about the RadWaste Summit,” DOE Deputy Assistant Secretary for Waste Management Frank Marcinowski said in his opening remarks at the Summit. “I believe it provides an excellent opportunity for those of us in the DOE waste management area. This is a unique forum for regulators, industry and government to discuss important issues and celebrate successes.”

The conference also featured a highly successful, day-long workshop on opportunities related to mitigating impacts of the WIPP shutdown for waste that is currently being managed as transuranic waste. The workshop was organized in conjunction with the Energy Facility Contractors Group’s Waste Management Working Group. For more information on the Summit, please visit www.radwastesummit.com and mark your calendars for next year’s meeting, which will be held Sept. 8 -11, 2015
