NRC Commissioner George Apostolakis’ tenure on the Commission ends today. Apostolakis, who has served on the Commission since 2010, confirmed two weeks ago that he would not be returning as commissioner after President Barrack Obama elected not two re-nominate him to another term. “I am proud and honored to have served as a member of the U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the past four years and to have served as a member of the Commission’s Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards for 15 years, including a term as Chairman of the Committee, prior to my appointment to the Commission,” Apostolakis said in a statement two weeks ago when the news originally broke. “I thank President Obama for the opportunity to serve. It has been an extraordinary professional and personal experience and a great privilege to work with my fellow Commissioners. I leave with great pride in what we have accomplished together.”
The White House has yet to nominate a replacement for Apostolakis, so the Commission will only operate with four members starting tomorrow. Another member, Commissioner William Magwood, also announced earlier this year that he would be leaving the NRC this summer. Both Magwood and Apostolakis are Democratic nominations, but their departures without a nominee in-place would leave majority control to the Republican-nominated remaining commissioners. With important budgetary decisions for Fiscal Year 2016 looming around the corner, this shift in control could mean a funding request to support the Yucca Mountain licensing review.
