CH2M-WG Idaho Completes Work on Radioactive Waste Exhumation Area

WC Monitor
8/22/2014

Department of Energy Idaho Site cleanup contractor CH2M-WG Idaho has wrapped up work cleaning out a seventh radioactive and hazardous waste exhumation area, the contractor said earlier this month. CWI said it is currently exhuming and removing targeted buried waste in an eighth area, and has removed radioactive and hazardous waste from 3.31 acres out of a total 5.69 acres that are targeted for cleanup under a 2008 agreement between DOE, Idaho and the Environmental Protection Agency. The exhumed material, which was produced at the Rocky Flats Plant and buried in a shallow landfill from 1954 to 1970, is sent offsite for permanent disposal. CWI said a final waste exhumation facility (Accelerated Retrieval Project IX) will be built in the future, and once the waste is removed, a soil cap will cover the landfill.
