SRR Begins Process Vessel Ventilation System Project

Savannah River Site liquid waste contractor Savannah River Remediation has kicked off a year-long project aimed at improving SRR salt disposition efforts and ready the site for the Salt Waste Processing Facility. SRR said it began installing a new process vessel ventilation system earlier this month, utilizing a facility that contains salt solution receipt tanks (SSRTs) at the Saltstone Production Facility. The system will ultimately turn decontaminated salt solution into a grout mixture that will be sent to SRS disposal units. The SSRTs are already in place, SRR said, but the process vessel ventilation system will ensure that no contamination is released from the facility by filtering and monitoring air before it leaves the facility. “The SSRT Process Vessel Ventilation system is a vital part in the success of SRR’s liquid waste mission, and an enhancement to the safety of our project,” SWPF Project Integration Manager Keith Harp said in a statement. “The system being installed has an environmental monitoring system that prevents any breakthroughs into the environment.”

When it is operational in July of 2015, SRR said the new system will benefit SWPF when it comes online and will increase the flexibility of current salt processing efforts within Savannah River’s liquid waste facilities, providing up to 120,000 gallons of receipt space for decontaminated salt solution at the Saltstone Production Facility. Currently, the decontaminated salt solution is received in a 4,000-gallon vessel.
