Acting Department of Energy cleanup chief Mark Whitney and David Foster, a senior advisor to Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, are scheduled to visit the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant today, along with Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio). The visit comes as the plant’s D&D contractor, Fluor-B&W Portsmouth, LLC, is preparing for significant layoffs this fall due to budget issues. Due largely to a drop in the price of uranium, which DOE provides to help fund work at Portsmouth, FBP has estimated a budgetary shortfall of approximately $110 million in FY 2015, and as a result, is looking to eliminate as many as 675 positions—one-third of the total Portsmouth D&D workforce.
