The National Energy Technology Laboratory has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Brazilian Coal Association related to carbon capture and storage, the Department of Energy announced late this week. The Department said the five-year agreement, signed June 6 in Florianópolis, Brazil, calls for the two groups to work together to assess the potential for CCS and other technologies that reduce the environmental impact of fossil fuel production and use. The MOU also calls on more research into technologies that could help clean up the relatively low-grade coal indigenous to Brazil. “By forming a bridge that makes trans-continental collaboration possible, the two agencies can work more efficiently to advance the technical, environment, and cost performance of fossil energy technologies,” NETL said in a July 18 release. The Department had signed a similar five-year agreement with the Brazilian Coal Association in 2007.
