PANTEX HIGH EXPLOSIVES PRESSING FACILITY ON TRACK FOR SUMMER COMPLETION

By ExchangeMonitor

The High Explosives Pressing Facility being built at the Pantex Plant is on schedule to be completed next summer and begin operating in September of 2016, the National Nuclear Security Administration said yesterday. The agency said the $65 million facility surpassed the 85 percent construction completion threshold this month, with work to install overhead cranes, flooring and mechanical/electrical systems remaining. Modern high explosives presses have been installed, as well as process equipment and blast-resistant doors. Administrative offices have been completed, and the roof is on, allowing work to continue during bad weather. “This new facility at Pantex will help NNSA fulfill its mission in maintaining the nation’s nuclear deterrent,” NNSA Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs Don Cook said in a statement. “I commend the work done on the facility and for maintaining the project on time and under budget.” The 45,000-square foot facility will replace and consolidate aging high explosives pressing operations at the plant. Construction work is being handled by Kiewit Construction and managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. Plant contractor B&W Pantex handled the design work and plant support, with a design subcontract to CH2M Hill.
