Round Up: Oklo completes NRC readiness assessment; Westinghouse, Google Cloud to collaborate to use AI for advanced nuclear projects; INL partners up with Microsoft to use AI to streamline nuclear licensing

By ExchangeMonitor

Oklo has completed its Nuclear Regulatory Commission pre-readiness assessment of Phase 1 of the combined license application for its Aurora project at Idaho National Laboratory.

The Santa Clara, Calif. based advanced nuclear company, has been working with NRC on the application since 2016. The company intends to submit its full combined license application to the nuclear regulator later this year.

Westinghouse will collaborate with Google Cloud to use artificial intelligence tools to expedite construction of advanced reactors and improve operations of existing power plants.

Westinghouse will pair its HiVE and bertha nuclear AI solutions with Google Cloud technologies to streamline construction of new nuclear reactors into an efficient and replicable process, according to its Tuesday press release.

The company intends to use AI driven technologies for the deployment of its AP1000 reactors, AP300 small modular reactors and eVinci microreactor technologies. The AI tools will also improve the current nuclear fleet with data-driven AI insights, Westinghouse said.

Idaho National Laboratory to collaborate with Microsoft to use Microsoft Azure cloud and artificial intelligence tools to streamline licensing and permitting applications for nuclear projects.

INL intends to use Microsoft’s Azure AI to help generate engineering and safety analysis reports, according to its Wednesday press release. The AI tool will have applicability for nuclear-related licensing, which includes new light water reactors and upgrades to existing light water reactors, INL said.

The technology is designed to take in and analyze nuclear engineering and safety documents and generate documentation required by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and Department of Energy for licensing.
