TCEQ To Vote on WCS Size, DU Disposal Requests Today

By ExchangeMonitor
The Texas Commission of Environmental Quality plans to vote this morning on the license amendment requests proposed by Waste Control Specialists that would expand the types of waste and size of the facility. The amendment requests, if approved, would approximately triple the size of the facility by upping the amount of waste the facility can store from 2.31 million to 9 million cubic feet. The vote will also determine if WCS will be allowed to dispose of depleted uranium at the site. Deplete uranium has been a controversial waste stream due to its long half-life, and the waste currently has no options for disposal. WCS is also seeking to decrease the amount of money needed to cover the costs of closing the site in the future. TCEQ’s commissioner meeting is planned to begin at 9:30 a.m. and can be viewed live at http://www.texasadmin.com/tceqa.shtml
