The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is beginning its statutorily-mandated update to the study determining capacity at Waste Control Specialists’ Andrews, Texas radioactive waste disposal facility. The same 2010 Texas state law that opened up the WCS site to accept waste from outside the Texas and Vermont Compact also mandated that the state update its study regarding the site’s capacity, released more than a decade ago in 2000. WCS has long promised customers that an updated site capacity study will show its Andrews facility can accept far more waste than currently projected. “In order to maintain the best possible information about anticipated waste volumes and physical, chemical, and radioactive characteristics of LLRW, the TCEQ is starting with previous projections prepared by the state and updating information to reflect changes over the 12-year period since these projections,” TCEQ said in a statement. “Given the long time period and changes anticipated with the beginning of commercial receipt of LLRW disposal at the Andrews facility, it is necessary to supplement currently available information on waste characteristics to accurately account for changes in the LLRW management and generator practices.”

TEXAS ASKS LLRW GENERATORS FOR INFO TO HELP UPDATE WCS CAPACITY
TCEQ has issued a national call for LLRW generators to fill out questionnaires prior to Sept. 1, 2012, regarding waste characterization and volumes that will assist the agency in its effort to update the site capacity study at WCS. More information on the questionnaires and links to the documents that TCEQ is seeking from generators can be found here.
