SRR Seeking Interested Companies for Glass Waste Storage, Operations Support

Liquid waste contractor Savannah River Remediation is seeking companies able to propose improvements or alternatives for plans involving future storage of vitrified waste, and in a separate effort is looking for support in other areas of work. Savannah River’s Defense Waste Processing Facility processes high-level tank waste into glass canisters, but space at the existing Glass Waste Storage Building is expected to run out in the coming years. As a less expensive option to a new building, SRR has developed a method for aboveground interim storage of the canisters in shielded storage containers—the Canister Interim Storage Project.
The Department of Energy has authorized SRR to study improvements in vitrified waste storage, including a transportation method for shipping the canisters off site. This week SRR posted an expression of interest seeking companies able to optimize the Glass Waste Storage Project conceptual strategy by “providing additional storage for DWPF canisters and by providing a transportation method for shipping the canisters, compatible with the commercial nuclear industry,” the EOI states. “Alternative methods and/or approaches may differ from the current GWSP conceptual strategy.” Responses are due July 25.
SRR Seeks Help in Work Scope Execution
SRR is also seeking companies able to help plan and execute outage and non-outage scopes of work, according to a separate expression of interest posted this week. “Subcontractor must have an organization that is capable and largely self-sufficient, with the SRR focus on managing the interface between subcontractor activities, ongoing operations, and overall project mission,” the notice states. “This is envisioned to be similar to methods employed in the commercial nuclear power industry.” The subcontractor would “develop and maintain an SRR knowledgeable core staff that will execute assigned work on an ongoing basis and will prepare for outages and other long term activities. Supplement staffing as necessary above the core levels for assigned scopes.” Responses are due July 22.
