Following the Babcock & Wilcox Company spin-off that will separate the power generation business unit from the rest of the company as of July 1, the newly renamed BWX Technologies shared the procurements and contract extensions it is focusing on in a presentation given during Investor and Analyst Day this week. The presentation to the company’s investment community highlighted several business priorities for the Technical Services Group, part of the unit that supports and operates the Department of Energy and National Nuclear Security Administration’s laboratories.

The presentation notes that a one-year extension is being negotiated with the Idaho Treatment Group that operates the Advanced Mixed Waste Treatment Facility. Another near-term opportunity identified in the presentation includes an evaluation of the Nuclear Fuel Services’ Blended Low-Enrichment Uranium project. The slide also highlights BWXT’s expectation of a half- or full-year extension with BW Conversion Services operating at the Portsmouth and Paducah plants. Addressing the company’s contract extension bids, spokeswoman Aimee Mills said, “Due to the timeline of the [Depleted Uranium Hexafluoride] and [Idaho Cleanup Project] procurements, there is a likelihood extensions will be needed and we are anticipating that may be the case, although there are still a number of factors in play.” According to her previous statement to WC Monitor, the upcoming company split is not expected to change operations or management at DOE or NNSA sites run by BWXT.

Company Submits Five-Year Extension Proposal at Portsmouth

Other priorities include proposals that have been submitted for the Kansas City Plant, the Transuranic Waste Processing Center in Oak Ridge, and Chalk River Laboratories, according to one slide of the presentation. The company also submitted a proposal for a five-year extension at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant, which would extend their current contract until 2021 if awarded. The contract’s base period is currently set to expire in March 2016.
