Despite protests by a rival, a team led by BWX Technologies has now twice won a $45 billion Department of Energy liquid waste contract at the Hanford Site in Washington state, which shows it is a “superior” proposal, CEO Rex Geveden said Monday during an earnings call.
“After multiple protests… the DOE decided to re-award the contract to the BWXT-led joint venture,” on Feb. 29, Geveden said of the 10-year Hanford Integrated Tank disposition contract. Hanford Tank Waste Operations & Closure (H2C) is made up of BWXT, Amentum and Fluor. The team was first awarded the contract in April 2023 and re-awarded the contract in February.
“While it is again being protested, we delivered a superior proposal as evidenced by our being selected twice,” Geveden said. “Assuming it settles in our favor, we expect a contract transition later this year.”
Like the first award in April 2023, the Hanford tank contract is being challenged again in federal court by AtkinsRéalis-led Hanford Tank Disposition Alliance. The challenge is playing out currently in two legal venues, the U.S. Court of Federal Claims and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
The BWXT quarterly earnings report and slide presentation were released Monday evening.
