West Valley cleanup contractor CH2M HILL B&W West Valley, LLC, has awarded a $2.6 million contract to Butler Construction for building a pad to store vitrified high-level waste canisters at the site. The western New York firm has completed several projects at West Valley, including construction of the remote-handled waste facility, according to CHBWV. There are currently 275 waste canisters of being stored in West Valley’s Main Plant Process Building, and they must be removed before planned demolition work at the Main Plant can get underway. Construction of the pad is set to be completed this fall. “Installation of the HLW storage pad will involve site excavation of depths up to 13 feet below grade, installation of compacted backfill, placement of 2,800 cubic yards of concrete, finish grading and the installation of robust security features,” states a CHBWV release.
