The wife of the man who attempted to sell U.S. nuclear submarine secrets to a foreign government in exchange for crypto currency will like her husband go to prison as a co-conspirator, according to a plea agreement published Friday.
Diana Toebbe, like her husband, will plead guilty to a single count levied against her, in this case, conspiracy to communicate restricted data in violation of the Atomic Energy Act. The charge carries a life sentence, but Toebbe’s husband, Jonathan, who also pleaded out on a single count, received a sentence of 12-and-a-half years.
The two have admitted their part in a scheme, which the FBI cracked with an undercover agent, to leverage Jonathan Tobbe’s access to classified Naval Reactors secrets to sell technology related to the Virginia-class attack submarine to an unidentified foreign government.
The unidentified foreign government, contacted by Jonathan Toebbe several years ago, quickly tipped off the FBI about the rogue Naval Reactors employee. A sting operation followed and both Toebbes were arrested last year.
