The Department of Energy-Idaho is conducting a market survey for the lease and loading of casks with spent nuclear fuel as well as the transportation of the fuel from non-commercial research reactors to the Idaho National Laboratory, according to a Sources Sought notice posted to FedBizOpps this week. The survey is intended for small businesses to determine the availability and technical capability of a small business to perform these two contracts. “The inventory to be shipped includes mostly Training, Research, Isotopes – General Atomic, (TRIGA) fuels; and, for the first years of shipments, approximately 200 SNF elements from a minimum of three separate Domestic Research Reactor facilities, including Penn State University, the University of Texas, and the University of California at Davis,” the cask leasing Sources Sought notice said. NAC International operates the current two contracts to load and move the SNF under an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract awarded by DOE. Capability statements by small business for the cask leasing and loading sources sought notice are due by April 28, while the transportation sources sought notice capability statements are due by May 5.
