DOE Names Permanent Manager for New Los Alamos Field Office

By ExchangeMonitor
The Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management (EM) yesterday announced the appointment of Douglas Hintz as the manager of its new Los Alamos (EM-LA) Field Office. Hintz most recently served as assistant manager for mission support at the DOE Savannah River Operations Office (DOE-SR) since September 2012, and will work closely during the transition with Christine Gelles, EM associate deputy assistant secretary for waste management, who was acting manager of the EM-LA Field Office before Hintz, according to a DOE press release.  The department set up the EM-LA Field Office in March as EM moves to take over “direct responsibility for the remaining legacy cleanup at the laboratory from the National Nuclear Security Administration,” according to the press release. “The work includes transuranic waste disposition, soil and groundwater remediation, and decommissioning and demolition of aging facilities.”

“Doug’s experience in helping to manage work at one of our largest cleanup sites makes him an excellent choice to head up the EM-LA Field Office as we continue to assume direct responsibility for the remaining legacy cleanup activities at the Los Alamos National Laboratory,” acting EM Assistant Secretary Mark Whitney said.
