Debbie Barr, program manager in the Department of Energy’s Office of Legacy Management, retired from the agency late last month, according to a press release published this week.
Barr, who started as program manager in 2018, retired Aug. 31, according to the Wednesday press release. During her time at DOE, she oversaw several programs within the agency’s legacy management office, including the Uranium Leasing Program, the Applied Science and Technology Program and the National Laboratory Network.
As program manager, Barr’s main responsibilities included “planning, developing, implementing, and managing the work scope of an extensive operating budget and monitoring contractors’ performance against this budget,” DOE said. She also assisted in developing applied science strategies “with the goal to improve management of disposal sites, remediation strategies, and to improve cleanup effectiveness.”
Barr began her career with DOE in 1995 at the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. In her role at the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Office, Barr was responsible for underground mapping at the proposed facility. She remained on the Yucca Mountain project until 2010, the same year the Barack Obama administration pulled the project’s funding.
Barr has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Master’s degree from Brigham Young University.
