The University of North Dakota’s Energy and Environmental Research Center will receive $2.5 million to support carbon capture and storage research under a two-year cooperate agreement reached with the Department of Energy this week. The funding will be used for research intended to “assist the energy industry in deploying and commercializing efficient, low-carbon, non-polluting energy technologies that can compete effectively in meeting requirements for clean fuels, chemicals, electricity, and water resources in the 21st century,” according to a release from Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s (D-N.D.) office.
Heitkamp and fellow North Dakota Senator John Hoeven (R), who last summer arranged a meeting between Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and top officials from EERC, applauded the agreement this week. “This federal investment from the Department of Energy today isn’t just a bonus for our fossil fuels researchers in Grand Forks – it’s a signal that the innovation and the practical solutions they are reaching will be strategies that the country and our global community can benefit from for years to come,” Heitkamp said in the release.
