California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) Thursday signed a bill updating the state’s climate change law. The bill updates the emissions reduction goal set in the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which called for California to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. The new bill calls for an additional 40 percent cut in emissions by 2030.
“Climate change is real, and knowing that, California is taking action,” Brown said in a release. “SB 32 and AB 197 are far-reaching moves that continue California on its path of vast innovation and environmental resilience.”
The state is on track to meet the original 2020 goal set in 2006, according to the release. “The new 2030 requirement in SB 32 will help make it possible to reach the ultimate goal of reducing emissions 80 percent under 1990 levels by 2050,” the release says.
