Looking toward a future as a developer of small nuclear reactors, Holtec International, Jupiter, Fla., added power generation to the responsibilities of its lead decommissioning executive, the company announced Monday.
Kelly Trice is now president Nuclear Generation and Decommissioning for Holtec, the company wrote in a press release. In his new role, Kelly will now spearhead Holtec’s attempts to build its SMR-160 small modular reactors, the design of which remains in the early stages of regulatory approval.
Kelly will also remain as the head of Holtec Decommissioning International, which he has led since 2019. The segment is responsible for cleaning up and demolishing shuttered power plants across the U.S.
Meanwhile, Holtec also announced that Rich Burroni will become the company’s new chief nuclear officer, responsible for “Holtec’s efforts to ensure regulatory, operational, and environmental compliance in accord with the industry’s norms and standards,” the company said in the press release. He will also be Holtec’s point man with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on “emerging nuclear issues and challenges,” the company said.
Burroni replaces Pierre Oneid, who was Holtec’s chief nuclear officer for more than 15 years, the company said. Oneid will become Holtec’s corporate senior vice president of domestic nuclear programs, focused on the company’s small reactor program and renewable energy programs.
Holtec is one of the primary providers of nuclear power plant decommissioning in the asset-transfer era.
