HOUSE REPUBLICANS PUSH FOR ANSWERS FROM NRC’S JACZKO

By ExchangeMonitor

After receiving no response to their March 12 letter to Nuclear Regulatory Chairman Gregory Jaczko, Congressional Republicans sent a follow-up yesterday, reiterating their request for Jaczko to clarify or amend testimony he gave the committee during hearings in December regarding his managerial conduct. Jaczko’s lack of effort to respond “suggests a pattern of disregard for congressional oversight and an abdication of your responsibility to be open and honest with the American public,” House Oversight Chair Darrell Issa (R-Calif), Subcommittee on Health Care, District of Columbia, Census and National Archives Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), Subcommittee on National Security, Homeland Defense and Foreign Operations Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) and Oversight member Ann Marie Buerkle (R-N.Y.) wrote in a letter sent yesterday. The letter restates claims made in March by Issa and the Oversight Committee that statements made to the committee as evidence, as well as a June 2011 NRC Inspector General report, contradict Jaczko’s December claims that he had no prior knowledge that his managerial style was creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation at the agency. “Your inability to control your temper affects the NRC’s work environment and the ability of the other commissioners and employees to carry out its mission,” yesterday’s letter states. “Making false statements to Congress is a serious matter. … Your failure to respond will be taken into consideration as the committee evaluates further investigative actions.”
