  • Jonathan Pershing, U.S. special envoy for climate change, is no longer looking down the barrel of unemployment. On Tuesday, he will start his new job as the director of the Environment Program at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
  • S. coal production fell in 2016, the U.S. Energy Information Administration announced this week. Production in 2016 was down 17 percent from 2015.
  • The Regulatory Accountability Act, a bill that would place several limits on the executive branch’s ability to draft regulations, passed the House this week by a vote of 238-183.
  • Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee have discovered a new way to pull CO2 out of ambient air using crystals.
  • Canadian CO2 capture company CO2 solutions announced some changed to its management team. Richard Surprenant has been named senior vice president of process engineering and chief technology officer. Louis Fradette, who currently holds that title, will move into the new role of director of the Valorisation Carbone Québec Project.
  • Next week is shaping up to be a doozy for the energy and environment communities, with confirmation hearings scheduled for Scott Pruitt, the Trump administration’s nominee to lead the Environmental Protection Agency; Rick Perry, nominee for secretary of energy; and Nikki Haley, nominee for U.N. ambassador. Pruitt and Haley will be in the hot seat Wednesday before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee respectively, while Perry faces the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Thursday.
