Nuclear material from the Japan Atomic Energy Agency’s Fast Critical Assembly reactor has arrived to the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Savannah River Site and Y-12 National Security Complex, the NNSA announced Monday. The NNSA recently decided to prepare plutonium from Japan for disposition at Savannah River and disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in New Mexico. The Japanese uranium will be stored at Y-12 and downblended. NNSA Administrator Frank Klotz said in a statement, “This strong partnership has helped the international community ensure that these materials never find their way into the hands of criminals, terrorists, or other unauthorized actors.”
