The Department of Labor responded to requests, including those by the Alliance for Nuclear Worker Advocacy Groups (ANWAG), and extended the comment period on proposed rule changes for compensation claims under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness and Compensation Program.
Despite the monthlong extension of the comment period, from Jan. 19 to Feb. 18, sick nuclear workers and their advocates still might not be satisfied because the extension probably won’t allot enough time for the newly created Advisory Board on Toxic Substances and Worker Health to be seated, review the proposed changes, and offer new insights on behalf of workers.
“I don’t think the board will still have time to review but at least the stakeholders will have more time to review the proposed changes,” ANWAG spokeswoman Terrie Barrie said via email.
The Labor Department’s notice said, “In response to requests from members of the public, the Department has decided to extend the public comment period. “
