By ExchangeMonitor

Los Alamos National Laboratory’s transuranic waste program announced this week that it has sent 172 shipments to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant so far this Fiscal Year, already surpassing last year’s 171 shipments. “Our goal this fiscal year is 184 shipments and we are on track to surpass that by a substantial margin,” Lee Bishop, TRU waste manager at the Department of Energy’s Los Alamos Site Office, said in a statement. “We expect to send in the neighborhood of 200 shipments to WIPP this year.” To meet a commitment to remove 3,706 cubic meters of transuranic waste by June 30, 2014, the Lab plans to ship about 800 cubic meters this year, 1,800 next year and 1,106 cubic meters in the first half of 2014.
