The Department of Energy and Los Alamos National Laboratory announced Friday the release of a Long Term Strategy for Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability document, an illustrated 20-page plan for the present and future of the site. The plan includes emphasis on cleanup of legacy waste from World War II and the Cold War, as well as looking at ways to prevent pollution and eliminate waste in the future. “The strategy integrates our environmental protection activities into one comprehensive program,” Pete Maggiore, assistant manager of the Environmental Projects Office for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos Field Office, said in a statement. “It’s designed to help us achieve our three environmental stewardship goals: clean up the past, control the present, and create a sustainable future.”
