Eletronuclear, Brazil’s state-run utility, gave Westinghouse Electric Company a contract to extend operations by 20 years at the country’s only functioning nuclear power plant.
The duo will conduct engineering analyses to prolong the life of the Angra 1 plant to 2044 from 2024. The analyses will be facilitated to maintain the plant’s safety and longevity as part of Eletronuclear’s long tTerm operations program.
The 35-year-old Angra 1 plant had 584 maximum transmission units (MTU) of spent nuclear fuel in storage in 2016, according to the Stimson Center, which projects it will hold some 2,850 MTU in storage by 2050.
Eletronuclear and Westinghouse didn’t respond to requests for comment on the price of the contract.
