MOX Red Team Reports Findings to DOE

The Red Team charged with looking at plutonium disposition options, including the unfinished Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility and downblending the material, submitted its findings to Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz on Aug. 17, the National Nuclear Security Administration confirmed to Weapons Complex Morning Briefing on Tuesday afternoon. “The MOX Red Team report was delivered to the Secretary’s office yesterday (17 August),” NNSA spokesman Al Stotts told Weapons Complex Morning Briefing.“DOE will make the report available to interested parties after the appropriate reviews for public release are complete.” Earlier this month, DOE extended the Red Team’s deadline from Aug. 10 to Aug. 17, after Moniz on June 25 ordered a review of disposition options for 34 metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium.
