NETL Seeking Information on High Value Uses for Coal By-Product

By Abby Harvey

The National Energy Technology Laboratory and U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy have requested information regarding novel technologies for high value, high carbon uses for coal byproducts. “Of interest are processes that produce carbon products for emerging and new markets such as carbon fibers for transportation and infrastructure applications; carbon nanotubes or graphene for energy, healthcare, environment, aerospace and electronics applications; and others,” according to the department request.

The Jan. 21 request for information specifies that no funding is currently available in this area. However, “Based on the input provided to this RFI, and other considerations, DOE may decide to issue a formal [funding opportunity announcement] for this area. “DOE is most interested in products with potential markets large enough to have a significant coal market impact, such as carbon fiber, or carbon-based building materials,” the document says. Responses to the RFI are due Feb. 18. Responses are to be submitted via e-mail. NETL asks that submissions included the applicant’s name, organization, email address, and telephone number in the body of the email.
