NINE-MONTH SALT WASTE PROCESSING OUTAGE BEGINS AT SAVANNAH RIVER

By ExchangeMonitor

In order to make updates to salt waste disposal equipment at the Savannah River Site, liquid waste contractor Savannah River Remediation this week suspended salt waste operations at the site until August. The nine-month planned outage will not affect the schedule for tank waste closure at the site, as work on the 15 tanks currently in the closure process and processing at the Defense Waste Processing Facility will continue, SRR spokesman Rick Kelley told WC Monitor. The outage, dubbed the Enhanced Low Activity Waste Disposal (ELAWD) Project, will include upgrades to the Saltstone Production and Disposal Facilities’ mixing and waste transfer system as well as the facility’s hopper. The improvements are necessary to allow the facility to increase its capacity as once the site’s new Salt Waste Processing Facility becomes operational, scheduled for 2014.

Steve Wilkerson, Waste Treatment Manager for the Saltstone Facilities, said in a statement, “Saltstone will end 2011 with a new record of processing nearly 1.5 million gallons of decontaminated salt waste. Once the ELAWD improvements are made, Saltstone will be able to support a 24/7 work schedule, which will be required when the SWPF comes on line, and provide a more significant reliability factor for operations.” Work will halt later this month on the interim salt waste processing method, currently in use until the completion of SWPF, to allow for routine maintenance to extend the life of the facility.
