National Nuclear Security Administration veteran Travis Howerton has been hired to fill a newly created role with Consolidated Nuclear Security, the government’s managing contractor at the Y-12 and Pantex nuclear weapons sites.
It appears Howerton is being given significant responsibility to make the combined management of two plants 1,000 miles apart work more smoothly and effectively. His title is senior director for enterprise strategy, and he said he will lead the Business System Modernization Project to consolidate the ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems at the two sites and to merge business processes.
“I will also have a broader role setting corporate business strategy in how the sites are operated from a people, process, and technology perspective,” Howerton said in response to questions.
Before assuming this new role a couple months ago, Howerton was at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory as deputy director of the Information Technology Services Division. Before that, he was at National Nuclear Security Administration headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he served as director of the Cyber Sciences Lab and chief technology officer.
Earlier, he worked for the NNSA in Oak Ridge, serving as chief information officer and security program manager for what was then called the Y-12 Site Office.
