With approximately six weeks left to go before his acting status expires, there is yet no sign from the White House when it will officially nominate David Huizenga to serve as Assistant Energy Secretary for Environmental Management. Huizenga was named in early July to serve as acting DOE cleanup chief, after Assistant EM Secretary Ines Triay stepped down from the position to take care of her ailing father. Huizenga can serve in an acting capacity for 210 days, according to DOE, which is set to expire on Feb. 14. “Secretary [of Energy Steven] Chu has a number of tools available to continue to effectively manage the Energy Department and the Environmental Management office—even in the case that a nomination for the Assistant Secretary position is not submitted to the Senate before that date,” DOE said in a written response.
