SCE Expects Three Bids For SONGS Decommissioning Contract

Southern California Edison (SCE) said this week it expects three bids in January from contractors for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station’s estimated $4.4 billion decommissioning general contract.

SCE spokeswoman Maureen Brown said the company anticipates bids from the following groups: Bechtel and Westinghouse; Team Holtec, a newly established, wholly owned subsidiary of Holtec International; and EnergySolutions and AECOM.

Bids are due Jan. 4, and Southern California Edison expects to award a contract in summer 2016. No bids have been submitted to date, Brown said. The company had originally planned for a mid-October bidding due date, but pushed the date back to January amid contractor team shake-ups.

SONGS began operations in 1968. Unit 1 was retired in 1992 and placed into SAFSTOR. Southern California Edison retired SONGS power plant Units 2 and 3 in 2013 when troubles with replacement steam generators proved too expensive to fix.
