Stanford University said Wednesday that its research into carbon capture and storage’s place in California’s energy mix will get a boost under a seed grant awarded by the institution’s Precourt Institute for Energy. The Precourt Institute awarded nine seed grants including one for a case study into California’s energy mix and how to balance energy generation from renewables, natural gas, and carbon capture and storage technologies to minimize cost of decarbonizing the grid.
“This project will examine key policy and technology changes that will make the process of reaching California’s CO2-reduction goals more effective and efficient,” a university release explains.
The Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 called for California to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. A bill approved last week calls for an additional 40 percent cut in emissions by 2030.
