S.M. Stoller is set to get an extension of up to 12 months on its current contract to provide mobile loading services for transuranic waste at various generator sites, according to a Department of Energy notice issued late last week. The extension is set to run for a base period of six months, from May 1 through Oct. 31, with two three-month option periods. The total estimated value of the extension is approximately $3.4 million, according to the March 30 notice. Work to be performed under the extension includes providing personnel to support the Los Alamos National Laboratory-Carlsbad Office and the Central Characterization Project in mobile loading of transuranic waste at various DOE cleanup sites.
The extension is necessary, DOE said, to provide adequate time to conduct a procurement for the planned follow-on contract. “The proposed contract extension will provide for the continuation of the critical mission of the DOE to dispose of TRU waste safely and protect human health and the environment until an award is made through a competitive acquisition process for a mobile loading unit contractor: a competitive 8(a) procurement for the work is in progress with a new Solicitation DE-SOL-0003653 scheduled to be issued in April, 2012,” the notice says, adding: "Stoller as the incumbent mobile loading contractor is the only contractor, at this time with the unique qualifications to continue the necessary mobile loading activities at the Carlsbad site without a break in service until such award (a new procurement) is made."
