Incumbents and Seven Other Carriers Sniffing Around Follow-on WIPP Transport Contract

By ExchangeMonitor

Just short of half a dozen people representing nine firms showed up to a site tour and pre-solicitation conference for a follow-on transuranic waste shipping contract June 1 and 2, according to an attendee list posted online by the Department of Energy.

The new Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Transportation Services contract will cover transport of contact-handled and remote-handled transuranic wastes and mixed hazardous constituents, including polychlorinated biphenyls and asbestos, between various DOE sites and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) near Carlsbad, N.M.

The deal will replace two transport contracts held by Visionary Solutions and CAST Specialty Transportation, which are set to expire in 2017. Both incumbents were in attendance for the recent tour.

The full attendee list is:

  • Boyle Transportation
  • Energy Solutions
  • Savage Logistics
  • CAST Specialty Transportation
  • 3rd Rock Logistics
  • QC Energy Resources
  • Visionary Solutions
  • Tri-State Motor Transit Co.
  • Secured Land Transport

Financial terms of the follow-on transport contract are to be determined. DOE is targeting a December reopening date for WIPP, which has been closed to new shipments of transuranic waste since an accidental radiation release and unrelated underground fire in 2014.
