As the full House takes up the Fiscal Year 2015 Energy and Water Appropriations Act, the Obama Administration threatened a veto of the bill as it stands due in part to numerous issues that include MOX and Yucca Mountain. The Administration “strongly opposes” House passage of the current legislation, according to a Statement of Administration Policy issued yesterday. “If the President were presented with H.R. 4923, his senior advisors would recommend that he veto the bill,” it states.
The Administration “strongly objects” to language that would require continued construction of the Mixed Oxide Fuel Fabrication Facility, which it has sought to put in a “cold standby” state in FY’15 while other options for plutonium disposition are explored. Additionally, “The Administration objects to the DOE funding provided in the bill for Yucca Mountain and is disappointed with the Committee’s rejection of the practical solutions proposed in the Administration’s nuclear waste strategy,” according to the statement. The Administration is also opposing the elimination of appropriations to the Uranium Enrichment Decontamination and Decommissioning Fund.
