It’s been a week since the Senate confirmed retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Frank Klotz to be Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, but it’s not clear when he will officially assume his new role. Bruce Held is continuing to serve as the acting NNSA chief while Klotz undergoes an administrative review, according to NNSA spokesman Josh McConaha. The process is different than the vetting of Klotz that took place before he was nominated in August of last year. “When someone is confirmed by the Senate, there is a process that takes place that covers everything from security to ethics,” McConaha said. “He is currently going through that process and will be sworn in as soon as it is complete.” Klotz’s nomination languished for nearly eight months in the Senate due to a partisan battle over nominations. It’s been more than 15 months since the NNSA has had a permanent leader. Before he retired from the Air Force, Klotz helped stand up Global Strike Command. He’s been a fellow with the Council on Foreign Relations since 2011.
