Air Force Brings Shifts LRS-B from Air Combat Command to Global Strike Command

By ExchangeMonitor
Defense Secretary Ash Carter and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh have directed the realignment of the Long Range Strike-Bomber program from Air Combat Command to Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC), effective Oct. 1, according to an April 20 service press release. The move will coordinate the service’s core mission of global strike and all bombers under one unified command responsible for organizing, training and equipping airmen to perform the mission for the bomber “leg” of the nuclear triad. The Air Force is also bringing the B-1 fleet under AFGSC. “This realignment places all three Air Forces bombers under one command and brings the LRS-B program with it,” Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James said. “Consolidating all of our Air Force assets in this critical mission area under a single command will help provide a unified voice to maintain the high standards necessary in stewardship of our nation’s bomber forces.” AFGSC’s increased capacity comes about one month after the Senate Armed Services Committee confirmed Gen. Robin Rand as the next AFGSC commander, increasing the command’s billet from three to four stars.
