The Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Agency on Sept. 22 awarded contract modifications to McCrone Associates Inc., and Schafer Corp., for $10 million and $9 million, respectively, to evaluate particle samples for verification and compliance involving the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty. The contracts will support the U.S. Atomic Energy Detection System, which comprises sensors set up in various global locations to detect nuclear events. After the sensors detect nuclear particles in space, in the air, underwater and/or underground, laboratories associated with the Air Force Technical Applications Center nuclear directorate will analyze the particles for nuclear identification and report the results to Air Force headquarters. The contracts both entail the providing of non-personal services for the processing of test samples. Both companies are expected to complete their shares of the work by Sept. 30, 2015.
