Amentum said Friday it has landed major new business commitments for decommissioning work at the Sellafield nuclear site in the United Kingdom that could be worth the equivalent of $1.9 billion in U.S. dollars.
At the same time, AtkinsRéalis said it is playing a major role in the England nuclear site’s cleanup.
After a competitive bid process, Sellafield Ltd chose Amentum as for remediation work inside the site’s High Security Area, according to a Friday Oct. 31 press release from Amentum.
In addition, Sellafield also picked The Decommissioning Alliance (TDA), a joint venture made up of Amentum, AtkinsRéalis and Westinghouse, as pond retrievals partner. The share of the work that could be awarded to Amentum is up to an estimated value of £1.4 billion ($1.9 billion USD), according to the release.
Separately, AtkinsRéalis announced Friday it is part of two joint venture teams of contractors to do work at Sellafield. Altogether, its contracts could be worth up to £4.6 billion over the 15-year contract period. That would be worth slightly more than $6 billion in U.S. dollars and more than $8.4 Canadian dollars.
Under a 15-year Decommissioning and Nuclear Waste Partnership deal, Amentum will clean up certain facilities and remove hazardous waste from contaminated old ponds at Cumbria, England property.
TDA will remove hazardous radioactive material from the First Generation Magnox Storage Pond and the Pile Fuel Storage Pond, so that it can be treated and moved to modern storage and disposal facilities, according to the press release.
Amentum plans to make use of robot technology such as the Bulk Sludge Retrieval Tool, a vacuum suction system for removing sludge from nuclear fuel ponds and pumping it away. Also, remotely operated vehicles will be used for inspection, sampling, retrieval, cutting and handling of waste in high-radiation zones,” Amentum said
