Former Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore Director Mike Anastasio is joining the Boards of Governors of both contractors that run the two national laboratories. Anastasio retired as the director of Los Alamos in 2011 after leading the lab for five years, and he spent three years as Livermore’s director from 2002 to 2005. His appointment begins immediately, and he’ll also serve on the Mission Committee of the University of California and Bechtel-led LLCs, according to Norman Pattiz, the chairman of both the Los Alamos National Security and Lawrence Livermore National Security boards. He is replacing Steve Beckwith, the vice president for Research and Graduate Studies at the University of California in the Office of the President.

Pattiz called Anastasio a “renowned national security expert and a highly respected leader and scientific advisor to the federal government, the national laboratory complex, academia and the broad scientific community.” Pattiz went on to say,  “No one has his combination of management experience, national security expertise and detailed working knowledge of the national labs, the University of California and the LLCs. The depth and breadth of Mike’s knowledge and expertise is invaluable and supports the university’s key role of assuring the labs’ science and technology excellence.”

Anastasio currently serves on the Pentagon’s Defense Science Board, the State Department’s International Security Advisory Board, and as a special advisor to the commander of U.S. Strategic Command. He is also a member of the Congressional Advisory Panel on the Governance of the Nuclear Security Enterprise and the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Peer Review and Design Competition at the NNSA Laboratories. “It is a privilege to be appointed to the Board of Governors,” Anastasio said in a statement. “I am deeply committed to helping in the success of both of these important institutions and to seeing that the scientific and engineering excellence resident at each flourishes.”
