Former Los Alamos and Lawrence Livermore Director Mike Anastasio is joining the Boards of Governors with both contractors that run the laboratories. Anastasio retired as the director of Los Alamos in 2011 after leading the lab for five years, and he spent three years as Livermore’s director from 2002 to 2005. His appointment begins immediately, and he’ll also serve on the Mission Committee of the University of California and Bechtel-led LLCs, according to Norman Pattiz, the chairman of both the Los Alamos National Security and Lawrence Livermore National Security boards. He is replacing Steve Beckwith, the vice president for Research and Graduate Studies at the University of California in the Office of the President.
Pattiz called Anastasio a “renowned national security expert and a highly respected leader and scientific advisor to the federal government, the national laboratory complex, academia and the broad scientific community. No one has his combination of management experience, national security expertise and detailed working knowledge of the national labs, the University of California and the LLCs. The depth and breadth of Mike’s knowledge and expertise is invaluable and supports the university’s key role of assuring the labs’ science and technology excellence.”
