AREVA announced this week it will provide engineering services for nuclear site decommissioning across the United Kingdom nuclear complex. Working with the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Shared Services Alliance, AREVA will work across twelve sites throughout the UK managed by decommissioning company Magnox Ltd., as well as the nuclear site at Dounreay in Northern Scotland, Radioactive Waste Management Limited’s site in Harwell and the Low-Level Waste Repository in West Cumbria, the company said. “This agreement confirms our engagement to contribute to future decommissioning projects for nuclear sites other than Sellafield, where our company is already active,” said Guillaume Dureau, Senior Executive Vice President of AREVA’s Back End Business Group, in a statement. “With this new agreement, AREVA, a historic partner with the British nuclear industry, continues to expand its engineering activities in the United Kingdom.” Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The contract will take place in two segments, according to the company. The first segment will involve engineering and design services for decommissioning projects across the country. This segment was won by AREVA and partner company Atkins. The second segment includes studies for the management of waste from nuclear site decommissioning; it was won by AREVA subsidiary AREVA RMC. AREVA recently opened a new U.K. office in Westlake near the Sellafield nuclear fuel reprocessing and decommissioning site in an effort to better support its contracts for decommissioning and radioactive waste management.
