Battelle Team Lines Up $5B Successor Contract at Idaho National Laboratory

By ExchangeMonitor

As expected, a team led by Battelle will continue to manage the Idaho National Laboratory for the Energy Department’s Office of Nuclear Energy through September 2024.

The new contract is worth an estimated $5 billion, BWX Technologies, a member of the lab management joint venture, said Wednesday.

The announcement came as no surprise. In December, Idaho National Laboratory Director Mark Peters said in an email to INL employees Energy Secretary Rick Perry had approved the five-year extension pending negotiations to iron out select details. In April, Battelle said the Energy Department had blessed the contract modification, clearing the way for the extension.

Battelle Energy Alliance is a wholly owned subsidiary of Battelle that has managed the lab since November 2004. Its integrated subcontractors are BWXT, AECOM, and the Electric Power Research Institute.

INL works across the DOE mission areas of energy, national security, science, and environment. The Battelle management contract covers nuclear science and technology, designing advanced reactors, and cybersecurity.

Both DOE’s Office of Environmental Management and the semiautonomous National Nuclear Security Administration have field offices at INL. Fluor Idaho became the Idaho Site’s cleanup contractor in 2016. under a half-decade contract worth about $1.5 billion.
