Bechtel Suspends Work on Bid for New Idaho Cleanup Contract

By ExchangeMonitor

Bechtel has suspended major work on a bid for the new Idaho Cleanup Project (ICP) Core contract, though the contractor hasn’t yet ruled out competing for the new contract entirely, WC Monitor has learned. Bechtel informed the Department of Energy of its decision to suspend bid work during a set of one-on-ones the Department held via teleconferences with potential bidders in mid-February, according to officials. In a brief statement late last week, Bechtel spokesman Fred DeSousa said, “We do continue to evaluate the opportunity including the new set of planned changes released by the Department of Energy.”

While the new ICP Core contract represents a major near-term business opportunity in the DOE cleanup program, questions persist over how much competition there will be for the job. Currently, Fluor appears to be the most likely to lead a bid for the contract, though it remains to be seen which other, if any, contractors may choose to follow suit. Since issuing a draft Request for Proposals for the new ICP Core contract last fall, the Department has made several changes to assuage industry concerns, most recently announcing modifications to the planned fee structure contract late last week. DOE anticipates issuing the final RFP for the new contract within the next two weeks.
