Bipartisan bill to keep NRC inspectors at decommissioning plants is back

By ExchangeMonitor

Two congressmen recently reintroduced a bipartisan bill to require the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to keep a federal inspector at shuttered nuclear power plants until all fuel at the plants is in dry storage.

Reps. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) and Mike Levin (D-Calif.) reintroduced their bill, the Increasing Nuclear Safety Protocols for Extended Canister Transfers (INSPECT) Act last week.

In a press release on Aug. 3, the lawmakers said they timed the filing to coincide with the anniversary of the day in 2018 that a spent fuel canister at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in California came perilously close to falling.

Congress had not published the full text of the 2023 bill as of Monday morning. Levin introduced similar legislation in 2022.
