The prime contractor for the Department of Energy’s Pantex nuclear weapons plant near Amarillo, Texas is in the market for a subcontractor to provide three “canine detection teams” capable of sniffing out explosives, according to an online procurement notice.
BWX Technologies-led PanTeXas Deterrence, the DOE National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) management contractor, posted the notice Wednesday via the federal System for Award Management (SAM.gov).
“The canine detection team will consist of one handler and one canine that are certified together,” according to the solicitation. “The team will conduct explosive detection searches at fixed posts and other locations as designated by Pantex Security.”
The winning subcontractor would provide the canine teams for a one- year period with the option to extend in one year increments up to four (4) option years, according to the notice.
In addition to being trained to sniff out explosive odors, the dogs must be in good health, have their necessary vaccination shots and have other attributes, according to the notice.
“Canines must be social and able to work in their operational environment.,” according to the solicitation. “Canines must be temperament tested and demonstrated to have sound disposition and good working skills.”
As for the dogs’ human handlers, they should either have or be able to acquire DOE “Q” clearance, the notice goes on to say.
Expressions of interest and capability statements are due by 5 p.m. Central Time on April 30. Interested parties need to notify Morgan Moon Perryman at morgan.moon@pantex.doe.gov and provide a point of contact for the request for proposals.
