Representatives at Tennessee Valley Authority’s Browns Ferry nuclear plant are touting the completion of the first ever HI-STORM FW cask loading campaign, which concluded Oct. 23.
According to a press release on the project, a total of 1,068 spent fuel assemblies were placed into dry storage, which sets the record for the highest number of units ever loaded in a single campaign at an operating reactor site. The MPC-89, or multi-purpose canister, is the world’s highest capacity and heat load canister for a boiling water reactor site storing 89 BWR assemblies, according to the release.
Holtec International headed the project at Browns Ferry, where crews removed a total of 342.49 kW from the facility’s three spent fuel pools. There were zero incidents during the loading, the company said, adding that the campaign adhered to ALARA standards, resulting in 6.5 mRem of accumulated crew dose per assembly on the final cask.
